Gastric Helicobacter The discovery of the association of Helicobacter pylori with gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric neoplasia has led to fundamental changes in the understanding of gastric disease in humans. Investigation of the relationship of gastric disease to Helicobacter spp. in other animals has resulted in the discovery of H. mustelae in ferrets with gastritis and peptic ulcers, H. acinonychis in cheetahs with severe gastritis, and H. Heilmannii in pigs with gastric ulcers. The presence of gastric Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) in the stomachs of dogs and cats has been known for many years but the relationship of those organisms to gastric disease remains controversial.
